Optima RedTop
High cranking power for performance cars and big engines
Spiral-cell AGM for winches, sound systems and dune trips
Optima makes spiral-cell AGM batteries, a design where the lead plates are wound into tight cylinders instead of stacked flat. That construction resists vibration and handles deep discharge well, which is why UAE off-roaders, winch users and car audio builds choose it. It is a specialist battery, so for an ordinary commuter car it is usually more than the job needs.
The sealed AGM construction means no electrolyte boils off, and the spiral cells keep their shape better than flat plates when the engine bay bakes after a dune session in Liwa. Heat still shortens any lead battery's life, but a YellowTop that is kept charged between trips typically outlasts a flooded battery doing the same work. Leaving accessories draining it flat in a hot car park is what ages it fastest.

Boats and marine use
Optima's SpiralCell design is unusual: each cell is a pair of lead plates and glass-mat separators rolled into a cylinder and sealed in a six-pack case, which gives the batteries their distinctive shape. The brand is now owned by Clarios, the group behind Varta and Delkor. The colour of the top tells you its job, with RedTop for starting power, YellowTop for deep-cycle and accessory loads, and BlueTop for boats. In the UAE, Optima has a following among Patrol, Wrangler and Land Cruiser owners who run winches, compressors and fridges on desert trips, and among drag and track enthusiasts who want a battery that will not leak or shake apart.

Yes, every Optima is an AGM battery, but with spiral-wound cells instead of the flat plates most AGM batteries use. The electrolyte is held in glass mats, so it cannot spill. The spiral shape is what gives it the extra vibration resistance.
YellowTop is the right choice because it is built for deep discharge from accessories as well as starting. RedTop is meant for starting and short bursts, and repeated deep drains shorten its life. Many desert setups pair a starting battery with a YellowTop as the second battery.
Optima uses American group sizes, so it fits many American trucks and SUVs directly and some Japanese 4x4s with an adapter or different clamp. Many European cars with DIN trays are a poor match. We check the tray, the hold-down and the terminal position before recommending it.
Optima is an American brand owned by Clarios, and its batteries are currently produced in Mexico. The country of manufacture is moulded or printed on the case. Genuine units carry the SpiralCell name and the distinctive six-cylinder shape.
