Older Model S and Model X cars and early Model 3 and Model Y use a 12V lead-acid battery, while newer ones use a lithium-ion low-voltage battery. The 12V battery in an electric car
An EV still has a small 12V battery that powers locks, screens and the computers that switch the main pack on. If it fails, the car will not wake up even with a full charge.
- Warnings like "12V battery needs service" usually appear weeks before failure.
- Older models use lead-acid; newer ones often use lithium-ion 12V units.
- A 12V boost can open the car so the low-voltage battery can be replaced.
- Never use an EV as a donor to jump start another car unless the maker allows it.
When the low-voltage battery dies, the Tesla may not respond to the phone key or key card at all, and on a Model 3 or Model Y the frunk has to be released by applying external 12V power to the leads behind the front tow-hook cover.

Does a Tesla have a 12V battery?
Yes. Besides the high-voltage pack that drives the car, every Tesla has a low-voltage battery that powers the computers, locks and screens. Older cars use a 12V lead-acid type and newer ones a lithium-ion low-voltage battery.
What happens when a Tesla 12V battery dies?
The car usually will not unlock or wake, the touchscreen stays dark and it cannot be shifted into drive. A low-voltage warning often appears in the app or on the screen days or weeks before full failure, so it is worth acting on early.
Can a Tesla be jump started?
A Tesla can be given low-voltage power to wake it up, after which the car brings its own systems online and recharges the low-voltage battery from the main pack. It should not be used to jump start another car, and our technicians know where to connect on each model.
How long does a Tesla battery last in the UAE?
In UAE conditions a Tesla battery typically lasts 2–4 years. Heat, short trips and long periods parked shorten that, so we recommend a test once the battery passes two years.
