A pre-purchase inspection is an independent check of a used car's engine, gearbox, body, electronics and history before you commit to buying it. In the UAE that means looking for hidden accident repairs, imported cars with salvage or flood history, mileage that does not fit the service record, and heat damage to rubber parts and the AC. Is this different from the official vehicle test?
Yes. The official test at an approved centre, run under the RTA in Dubai, confirms a car is roadworthy and fit for registration. A pre-purchase inspection looks at condition and value: accident history, hidden faults, wear that will soon cost money, and whether the car matches what the seller describes.
How can you tell if a car has been in an accident?
Paint thickness readings are the strongest clue, because a repainted panel reads clearly thicker than factory paint. The inspector also looks for uneven panel gaps, overspray on rubber seals, disturbed bolts on the wings and bonnet, and weld marks on the chassis rails. A VIN history check adds recorded insurance claims or import records where they are available.
Can the seller be there during the inspection?
Yes, and it often helps, since the seller can answer questions and hand over keys and service records. The inspector shares the findings with you first, so you decide what to raise with the seller.
