Reading a Japanese (JIS) battery code
Most Japanese cars use JIS-sized batteries with codes like 55D23L or 80D26R. The code tells you everything the technician needs.
- The first number is a performance rank, not the Ah. Higher means more starting power.
- The letter (B, D, E…) is the width and height class of the case.
- The next two digits are the length in centimetres.
- L or R tells you which side the positive terminal sits on. Getting it wrong means the cables will not reach.
Older Honda radios can lock and display "CODE" after the battery is disconnected, leaving the owner without audio until the anti-theft code is found, which a memory saver during the swap avoids.

Why does my Honda radio ask for a code after a battery change?
Many older Honda audio systems have an anti-theft lock that activates when power is cut. The code is often on a card with the owner manual, or the dealer can retrieve it from the radio serial number. Our technicians use a memory saver to avoid this.
What battery size does a Honda Accord take?

Does a Honda hybrid have a separate 12V battery?
