Reading a Japanese (JIS) battery code

Most Japanese cars use JIS-sized batteries with codes like 55D23L or 80D26R. The code tells you everything the technician needs.

The first number is a performance rank, not the Ah. Higher means more starting power.
The letter (B, D, E…) is the width and height class of the case.
The next two digits are the length in centimetres.
L or R tells you which side the positive terminal sits on. Getting it wrong means the cables will not reach.
